Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has said he should have sacrificed his wicket for Suryakumar Yadav against Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2020 final on Tuesday. Suryakumar’s fine season came to a disappointing end as a horrible mix-up with Rohit Sharma resulted in his run-out.

Fortunately for Mumbai Indians, it didn’t hurt them as they went on to win the game by five wickets to clinch their fifth title.  Chasing 157, Mumbai Indians crossed the finishing line in the 19th over. Skipper Rohit Sharma top-scored for the side, scoring 68 off 51 balls before departing in the 17th over.

Earlier in the game, Delhi Capitals recovered from a disastrous start to post a competitive total of 156 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs after their skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first.

Delhi lost Marcus Stoinis for a duck on the very first ball of the game before Ajinkya Rahane (2) and Shikhar Dhawan (15) departed cheaply too, leaving Delhi reeling at 22 for 3 in the fourth over. But before Delhi Capitals could make further inroads in the game, Iyer and Pant steadied the ship with a 96-run stand.

Both the batsmen scored fifties. While Pant scored 56, Iyer remained unbeaten on 65. For Mumbai Indians, Trent Boult picked up 3 for 30 while Nathan Coulter-Nile took 2 wickets for 29.

Rohit Sharma’s reaction on the run-out:

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma talked about the run-out of Suryakumar Yadav. Rohit and his teammate were involved in a fine partnership before a mix-up ended the stand which was worth 45 runs. Mumbai were on 90 for 1 in the 11th over when Suryakumar departed after sacrificing his wicket.

After playing the ball straight to mid-off, the skipper pushed for a single but Suryakumar looked unsure. But with Rohit already reaching the non-striker’s end, the batsman sacrificed his wicket. Speaking after the game, Rohit said he should have sacrificed his wicket for his in-form teammate.

“We made sure Ishan and Surya had confidence – just have to let Ishan loose, and Surya is a more matured player. The kind of form he was in, I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya. But throughout the tournament he has played some incredible shots,” said Rohit Sharma.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t have the fans at the stadium. We missed playing at the Wankhede and hopefully we can get back there next year,” he added.
