The top-ranked Test side has been dominant in the last few years anywhere they have played. The batsmen have scored runs, well-backed by the bowlers. What has been heartening is to see the fast bowlers claiming more wickets than the bowlers.

There has been a difference in attitude in this team ever since Virat Kohli took over the reins of India. Leaving aside India, England and Australia, Ian Chappell has expressed concerns over the decline of other Test-playing nations such as South Africa and Sri Lanka.

“If Test cricket is to be a viable part of the game’s future, the standard of play needs to remain high. Whilst it’s true India – with a large talent pool, unlimited finances and the IPL – has a huge advantage, it’s their attitude towards achieving excellence that should be copied by any team with an ambition to be the best,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

India extended their lead in the ICC World Test Championship inflicting another whitewash. They are currently at 240 points from five matches. In the recently concluded series, the pace bowlers scalped more wickets than the spinners which is the first of its kind.

Ian Chappell feels India’s bowling unit is now more equipped which gives them an edge in all conditions. He also suggested that if India can fit in Hardik Pandya in this line-up, they will be unbeatable in the future.

“These pace spearheads, added to India’s always capable spinners, give the attack a potency that not too many other countries can match,” Chappell said. “Slot a fit seam-bowling allrounder in Hardik Pandya into that group and India are more than adequately placed to cope with any conditions they encounter. A well-balanced bowling attack is the perfect antidote to any attempt to provide conditions that heavily favour the home side,” he concluded.
