Australia secured a solid 87-run victory against Sri Lanka on Saturday (15th June) in the match 20 of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at The Oval (London).

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka sent Australia to bat first. The defending champions Australia managed to score 334/7 in the first 50 overs. Chasing down that big target, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 247 runs (45.5 overs).

i) Australia scored 334/7 (50 overs) in the first innings. It is the third highest ODI total for Australia against Sri Lanka. Their top two highest totals in this list are 376/9 in 50 overs (at Sydney on 8th March 2015) and 368/5 in 50 overs (at Sydney on 12th February 2006).

ii) While Australia won this match by 87 runs, it is their second largest victory (by runs) against Sri Lanka in Cricket World Cup. The record victory margin in this list is winning by 96 runs at Centurion on 7th March 2003.

i) The opener Aaron Finch and the no.4 batsman Steven Smith had an incredible 173-run partnership for the third wicket. While Australia’s best partnership against Sri Lanka in Cricket World Cup history is a 182-run opening partnership (between Rick McCosker and Alan Turner), the latest Finch-Smith’s 173-run partnership is the second highest CWC partnership for Australia against Sri Lanka.

ii) Australian captain Aaron Finch scored 153 runs which is the highest individual score by an Australian captain in Cricket World Cup history (the previous record was Ricky Ponting’s 140* against India in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup final). It is also the highest individual score by an Australian ODI captain against Sri Lanka (the previous record was 124 runs by Ricky Ponting at Sydney on 12th February 2006).

iii) Aaron Finch’s 153-run was also the third highest individual score by an Australian batsman in Cricket World Cup history. The top two record holders in this list are David Warner (178 runs against Afghanistan at Perth on 4th March 2015) and Matthew Hayden (158 runs against West Indies at North Sound on 27th Mach 2007)

iv) The left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc had the bowling figures of 10-0-55-4. It is the second best CWC bowling figures by an Australian bowler against Sri Lanka. Former left-arm pacer Nathan Bracken is the record holder with the bowling figures of 9.4-3-19-4 at St. George’s on 16th April 2007.

v) During this match, Mitchell Starc (400 international wickets) becomes the eighth Australian bowler to take 400 international wickets. Before him, only one Australian left-arm bowler achieved this feat and he was the former left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson (590 wickets).

 

Sri Lanka

i) By the end of this match, Lasith Malinga has bagged 48 ODI wickets against Australia. Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan also took the equal number of ODI wickets against Australia (48 wickets). No other Sri Lankan bowlers have picked up more ODI wickets against Australia.

ii) Sri Lankan opening batsman and captain Dimuth Karunaratne scored 97 runs. As a Sri Lankan captain, it is the second highest individual ODI score against Australia. Sanath Jayasuriya is the record holder with 122 runs (at Sydney on 9th January 2003). Also, the 97-run innings is the third highest individual score by any captain against Australia in Cricket World Cup history.
