In the match 25 of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, New Zealand defeated South Africa in the thrilling contest at Birmingham. In that 49-over match, New Zealand won that game by four wickets with three balls remaining.

i) This victory was the fifth consecutive Cricket World Cup victory for New Zealand against South Africa. Last time, New Zealand suffered a CWC defeat against South Africa was in 1999 Cricket World Cup.

i) It was Hashim Amla‘s 176th ODI innings where he completed 8,000 ODI runs. Amla has scored 8,031 runs in ODI career. He is the second fastest batsman (by the number of innings) to complete 8,000 ODI runs. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is the fastest batsman to score 8,000 ODI runs as he achieved this feat in 175 ODI innings. Moreover, after Jacques Kallis (11,550 runs), AB de Villiers (9,427 runs) and Herschelle Gibbs (8,094 runs), Amla is the fourth South African batsman to score 8,000 ODI runs.

New Zealand

i) Martin Guptill has scored 942 runs in Cricket World Cup. Among the New Zealand batsmen, only the former cricketer Stephen Fleming (1,075 runs) scored more CWC runs than Guptill.

ii) Martin Guptill becomes the first New Zealand batsman and tenth overall batsman in Cricket World Cup history to lose the wicket through the hit wicket. Also, Guptill is the sixth New Zealand batsmen in ODI history to be dismissed through the hit wicket.

iii) New Zealand captain Kane Williamson remained not out on 106 runs. It is the second highest individual score by a New Zealand cricketer against South Africa in Cricket World Cup history (the record is 134* by Stephen Fleming in 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup). Also, it is the third highest individual ODI score by a New Zealand captain against South Africa.

iv) Kane Williamson has scored 3,026 ODI runs as a captain. Among the New Zealand ODI captains, Kane Williamson is the second batsman to score 3,000+ ODI runs as a captain. Stephen Fleming was the first man to achieve this feat who scored 6,295 ODI runs as an ODI captain.
