Sri Lanka stunned the cricket world by beating the strong host side England on Friday (21st June) at Leeds in the match 27 of the ongoing 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lanka managed to score 232/9 (50 overs) in the first innings after winning the toss. Later, Sri Lanka bundled out England for 212 runs (47 overs). England finally suffered a 20-run defeat.

i) Sri Lanka bundled out the home team England for 212 runs (47.4 overs). In the Cricket World Cup history, it is the lowest completed total for England against Sri Lanka. Their previous lowest completed total in this list was 229/6 (50 overs) at Colombo (RPS) on 26th March 2011.

During this match, Malinga surpassed Rangana Herath’s international wicket tally (525 wickets) and only Muttiah Muralitharan (1,331 wickets) and Chaminda Vass (760 wickets) are ahead of Malinga in the most international wickets as a Sri Lankan bowler list.

iii) The pacer Lasith Malinga (51 wickets) becomes the fourth bowler and second Sri Lankan bowler to pick up 50+ wickets in Cricket World Cup. The other three bowlers are former Australian pacer Glenn McGrath (71 wickets), former Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (68 wickets) and the former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram (55 wickets).

iv) Lasith Malinga had the bowling figures of 10-1-43-4. It is the best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan bowler against England in Cricket World Cup history. Also, Dhananjaya de Silva (8-0-32-3) delivered the second best bowling figures in this list. The previous record of this list was Dilhara Fernando’s 9-0-41-3 at North Sound on 4th April 2007.

i) Chris Woakes is the second most ODI wicket-taker as an England bowler against Sri Lanka. While he has picked up 24 ODI wickets against Sri Lanka, James Anderson is leading this table with 34 ODI wickets against Sri Lanka.

ii) Eoin Morgan is the most CWC run-scorer as an England captain. By the end of this match, Morgan has scored 360 CWC runs as an England captain. The previous record was 354 runs by Mike Gatting.

iii) Ben Stokes remained not out on 82 runs. In Cricket World Cup history, it is the second highest individual score by an English left-handed batsman against Sri Lanka. Former English left-handed batsman David Gower is the record holder with 130 runs at Taunton on 11th June 1983.
