England claimed an important victory against India on Sunday (30th June) at Birmingham during the match 38 of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

After winning the toss, England managed 337/7 (50 overs) in the first innings. Chasing down that total, India finished their second innings on 306/5 (50 overs). England finally won this match by 31 runs.

ii) Before this victory, England previously beat India in the Cricket World Cup in 1992 edition. Since then, England remained winless against India in three consecutive CWC matches (two defeats and one tie) before this victory.

i) India scored 306/5 (50 overs) which is the second highest CWC total for India against England. Their record CWC total against England is 338 (49.5 overs) at Bengaluru on 27th February 2011.

ii) Before this defeat, India previously lost a match in the CWC round-robin stage in 2011 edition. India’s previous defeat in the CWC round-robin stage was against South Africa at Nagpur on 12th March 2011.

i) It was Eoin Morgan’s 304th international match for England. After this match, Morgan becomes the second most-capped player for England in international cricket history. Only James Anderson is ahead of Morgan with 361 international matches for England.

ii) England batsmen Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow put a 160-run opening partnership. It is England’s highest opening partnership against India in ODI history (the previous record was 158 runs between Alastair Cook and Ian Bell at Rajkot on 11th January 2013). Also, it is England’s second-highest opening partnership in CWC history (the record is 172 runs between Moeen Ali and Ian Bell against Scotland at Christchurch on 23rd February 2015).

iii) Opener Jonny Bairstow scored 111 runs. It is the fourth highest individual score by an England batsman against India in the Cricket World Cup history.

iv) By the end of this match, Joe Root has scored 13,354 runs in the international career. Surpassing Ian Bell (13,331 runs), Root becomes the third most run-scorer for England in the international career. In this list, only Alastair Cook (15,737 runs) and Kevin Pietersen (13,779 runs) are ahead from Root.

India

i) Indian pacer Mohammed Shami had the bowling figures of 10-1-69-5. He is the sixth Indian bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in a CWC match. Also, it was the second best CWC bowling figures by an Indian bowler against England (the record is 10-0-23-6 by Ashish Nehra). On the other hand, it was the second best ODI bowling figures by an Indian bowler against England on the English soil (the record is 10-0-25-6 by Kuldeep Yadav).

ii) Leggie Yuzvendra Chahal had the bowling figures of 10-0-88-0 which is the most expensive bowling figures by an Indian bowler in CWC history. The previous record holder was the pacer Javagal Srinath with the bowling figures of 10-0-87-0 (against Australia at Johannesburg on 23rd March 2003).

iii) Rohit Sharma (102 runs) becomes the fifth cricketer to score at least three centuries in an edition of the Cricket World Cup. The first four cricketers in this list are Mark Waugh (Australia; three centuries in 1996 CWC), Sourav Ganguly (India; three centuries in 2003 CWC), Matthew Hayden (Australia; three centuries in 2007 CWC) and Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka; four centuries in 2015 CWC).

iv) Indian captain Virat Kohli becomes the first captain in CWC history to score five consecutive 50+ scores. Though Steven Smith (Australia) achieved this feat in 2015 CWC, he was not a captain.

v) At the end of this match, MS Dhoni was not out on 42 runs. Before this innings, only once MS Dhoni remained not out in the second innings of an ODI match but India suffered a defeat. During the Kolkata ODI against Pakistan on 3rd January 2013, Dhoni was not out on 54 runs in the second innings but India suffered a defeat by 85 runs.
