On Wednesday (5th June), India beat South Africa by six wickets (with 15 balls remaining) at The Rose Bowl (Southampton) in the match 8 of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

After winning the toss, South Africa scored 227/9 (50 overs) in the first innings. India chased down that target easily in 47.3 overs after losing four wickets.

i) In the second innings of this match, India comfortably chased down the 228 runs target (230/4) in 47.3 overs. It is India’s highest successful chase in England in a Cricket World Cup match. Their previous record was chasing 214 runs target (217/4 in 54.4 overs) against England at Manchester on 22nd June 1983.

i) Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada put a crucial 66-run partnership for the eighth wicket. In the Cricket World Cup history, it is South Africa’s second highest partnership for the eighth wicket. The best record is 67 runs partnership for the eighth wicket between Nicky Boje and Lance Klusener (against West Indies at Cape Town on 9th February 2003).

 

India

i) Playing at the age of 37 years and 333 days, MS Dhoni becomes the oldest Indian wicketkeeper to play a Cricket World Cup match. The previous record was playing at the age of 37 years and 109 days by Farokh Engineer.

ii) By the end of this match, MS Dhoni has scored 17,027 international runs. He becomes the only second wicketkeeper-batsman, after Kumar Sangakkara (17,840 runs), to score 17,000 international runs.

iii) MS Dhoni is the sixth Indian batsman to score 6,000 ODI runs outside India as he has scored 6,009 ODI runs outside India.

iv) Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling figures of 10-0-51-4 are the second best bowling figures by an Indian bowler on the Cricket World Cup debut. The record is 9-1-35-4 by Mohammed Shami (against Pakistan at Adelaide on 15th February 2015).

v) Rohit Sharma scored his 23rd ODI century. After Sachin Tendulkar (49 centuries) and Virat Kohli (41 centuries), Rohit Sharma is in the third number to score most ODI centuries for India.

vi) Rohit Sharma is the ninth Indian batsman to score 12,000 international runs as he has scored 12,048 runs in the international career.

vii) By the end of this match, Rohit Sharma has scored 5,033 ODI runs outside India. Before him, eight Indian batsmen crossed the 5,000 ODI runs mark outside India.

viii) Rohit Sharma remained not out on 122 runs. It is the second highest individual score by an Indian batsman against South Africa in a Cricket World Cup match. The record holder is Shikhar Dhawan with 137 runs (at Melbourne on 22nd February 2015).
