Following stunning knocks in the ongoing Ashes series, the flamboyant batsman Steve Smith has raised his ranking in the ICC Test Rankings. He surpassed Kane Williamson to take the second place in the chart. Not only Kane Williamson but also Steve Smith came close to overtake Virat Kohli in the ranking chart.

Steve Smith has moved up to the second spot after scoring a valiant knock of 92 during the first innings of the drawn second Ashes Test against England at the Lords’ Cricket Ground. The blistering knock saw Smith gain one spot and close in on top-ranked Indian skipper Virat Kohli in the updated rankings.

Steve Smith 9 points away from Virat Kohli:

The Australia batsman has overtaken New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and is now only nine points behind Kohli (922 points), but the India captain will get a chance to consolidate his position in the upcoming two-match Test series in the West Indies starting Thursday.

The 30-year-old Smith has so far scored 378 runs in the ongoing Ashes series between England and Australia. England all-rounder Ben Stokes bettered his ranking by six places to achieve the 26th position while wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow moved seven places to take the 30th spot.

Meanwhile, India could lose their top position in the ICC Test Team Rankings as even a 1-0 loss to the West Indies in their upcoming series will see them slip to 108 points. That margin will be enough for the West Indies to overtake Pakistan to the seventh position at 88 points.
