ICC Warns BCCI After Team Manager Was Seen Using Mobile Phone In Dressing Room: Reports

The just-concluded one-off Test between India and Afghanistan was played in a wonderful spirit. Players from either sides made sure that their conduct does not harm the reputation of the gentlemen’s game. The occasion held a historic importance and everything went well as far as the game was concerned.

But amidst all this, the cameras captured a moment that might land the Indian team management in hot waters. Sunil Subramaniam, the Indian team manager, was seen using his mobile phone in the dressing room while the game was being played. He was also seen showing something to the Indian players who were a part of the playing eleven.

It clearly violates the rules set by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The ICC has made it clear that any communication device is not allowed in the field of play.

“Communication devices are prohibited within the PMOA [player and match official area], barring specific exceptions. Without exception, no player shall be in possession of, or use a communication device (such as a mobile phone or a device which is connected to the internet), while in the PMOA,” regulation of ICC maintained.

In 2011, the ICC had banned the use of mobile phones in the dressing room.  The governing body had taken the decision in an effort to clamp down on corruption in the sport.

“The Board strengthened the ICC Anti Corruption Code by introducing penalties against players and support staff who breach the rules by carrying communication devices into the dressing room areas.

“The penalties, supported by the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA), will include fines,” read the statement from ICC at that time.

Meanwhile, report suggest that BCCI stated that the team manager is allowed to use phone in the dressing room. However, ICC’s anti-corruption unit has reportedly contacted Sunil Subramaniam.  The anti-corruption unit told the manager that such a conduct is unpardonable in the dressing room.

Last month, the ICC had also warned Pakistan after some of their players were seen wearing smartwatches while playing on the field during the Test against England at Lord’s.

Coming to the game, India defeated Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs inside two days.
