For the first time in any major ICC event, a married couple batted together for a specific team in international cricket. The duo, Dane Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp added a 67-run partnership for South Africa to make the chase easy during the ICC Women’s World T20. During the course, they opened a page together in the record books by becoming the first married couple to bat together in an ICC Event.

The women made history

Coming to the match, initially, it was South Africa, who won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Justifying the toss decision, South African bowlers delivered the goods more often than not to put Sri Lanka below 100.

Both Sri Lankan openers got out on cheap scores while Shashikala Siriwardene got the start of 21 runs but failed to capitalise it. Dilani Manodara was the other batsman, who touched 20-run mark in the innings.

Dane Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp added 67 runs:

In total, seven batsmen have been knocked out for a single digit, which sums up the story of Sri Lanka. They have managed to put 99 runs on the board asking South Africa to chase down the tally.

Shabnim Ismail was the pick of the bowlers, who bagged three wickets for just ten runs. In reply to the chase, Sri Lanka was successful in sending both the openers back to the pavilion for a cheap score.

Just when things looked bleak for South Africa, the couple, Dane Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp stitched a 67-run partnership together to ease things for the side. Though Kapp walked back, Niekerk, in the presence of Du Preez guided the team to victory.

All in all, it was a decent effort from South African women, who were in the driver seat for major part of the game. Meanwhile, the record of being the first couple to bat together will be cherished by both the ladies.
