ICC World Cup 2019: Australia Players' Rating

Five-time World Cup champions, Australia came to the ICC World Cup 2019 in a bid to defend their title. But their campaign came to an end one step ahead of the final going down against the host England by eight wickets in the second semifinal at Edgbaston.

Australia looked dominating with their openers – David Warner and Aaron Finch doing the bulk of the scoring and well supported by new ball bowlers – Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. But defeat to South Africa in the last group game, and a few injuries hurt their campaign before the semifinals. Usman Khawaja‘s ouster from the playing XI for the semifinals made the difference as Australia’s top-order crumbled making things easy for England who chased down a target of 223 runs in just 32.1 overs to end their campaign.

Here is the players rating of the Australia Cricket team for the ICC World Cup 2019:

David Warner (9/10)

David Warner has returned to the international circuit with a bang finishing as the second highest run-scorer after Rohit Sharma. The southpaw has amassed 647 runs one short of Rohit at an average of 71.88 including three hundred and half-centuries each.

Aaron Finch (c) (8/10)

Aaron Finch has led the team from the front. Despite making a dismal start to the World Cup, the Australian skipper came back strongly to finish with 507 runs including two centuries and five fifties. The opener has struck the ball beautifully which will give him the confidence going forward.

Steven Smith (6.5/10)

Steven Smith has made an outstanding comeback to international cricket. The former Australia skipper has provided stability to the middle order keeping things into perspective. Smith has scored 379 runs from ten matches including four half-centuries, to sum up, his World Cup campaign.

Peter Handscomb (0.5/10)

Peter Handscomb made his World Cup debut in the semifinal game against England but failed to make any mark getting out for only four runs. The right-handed batsman will want to forget this game and come back stronger to cement his place in the playing XI.

Marcus Stoinis (4/10)

Marcus Stoinis, the highly-rated Australian all-rounder, has failed to live upto the expectations in this World Cup. The 29-year-old cricketer has managed to score only 77 runs and claimed seven wickets which is below average considering his standards.

Glenn Maxwell (3.5/10)

Glenn Maxwell has struggled throughout the World Cup campaign failing to put runs in the middle order. The all-rounder managed to score only 177 runs from ten matches with the best score of 46 runs against Sri Lanka. Maxwell needs to bounce back strongly post the World Cup to retain his place in the playing XI.

Alex Carey (wk) (7.5/10)

Alex Carey has been the find for Australia in this campaign. He has been gutsiest cricketer of the tournament scoring runs for the team when his side needed the most. He batted with a broken chin in the semifinal against England and earned praise from all quarters. Carey amassed 375 runs from ten matches at an average of 62.50 which will give him confidence going forward.

Mitchell Starc (9.5/10)

Mitchell Starc has been of top-class in this World Cup as he replicated his effort from the 2015 World Cup where he finished as the highest run-scorer. Starc once again ended the campaign with 27 wickets; thus, breaking Glenn McGrath’s record of most wickets in one World Cup.

Pat Cummins (6/10)

Pat Cummins complemented Mitchell Starc well and did an outstanding job with the new ball. He has been economical throughout the tournament claiming 14 wickets from ten matches at an economy rate of 4.95. Cummins will hope to keep up the excellent work and keep himself injury free looking forward after the World Cup.

Jason Behrendorff (5.5/10)

Jason Behrendorff had an outstanding debut campaign for Australia. The left-arm pacer rallied well behind Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins and returned with ten wickets from five matches including a five-wicket haul against England. Behrendorff will look to draw confidence from this World Cup campaign and cement his place in the playing XI.

Nathan Lyon (4.5/10)

Nathan Lyon had an average campaign in the World Cup for Australia. He has struggled to claim wickets but was economical in the middle overs which helped the defending champions retain his place in the playing XI.

Kane Richardson (3/10)

Kane Richardson has struggled to get opportunities amidst some top-class fast bowlers. The right-arm pacer played only two matches picking five wickets but was expensive and thus; lost his place in the playing XI to Jason Behrendorff.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (4/10)

Nathan Coulter-Nile has blown hot and cold in this World Cup for Australia. He has chipped in with both bat and ball but has struggled for consistency which cost his place in the playing XI. He managed to pick only four wickets and contributed with 98 runs including a knock of 92 runs against West Indies.

Matthew Wade came in as a replacement for injured Usman Khawaja ahead of the semifinals but didn’t get to play any game.

Adam Zampa (3.5/10)

Adam Zampa has failed to create an impact in this World Cup. He has gone for plenty of runs and as a result, lost his place to Nathan Lyon midway in the World Cup. Zampa has managed to pick only five wickets.
