India opener Rohit Sharma has been in blistering form in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. Batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes if Rohit fires in the next two games, India will win the trophy on July 14.

Gavaskar heaps praise on Rohit

Rohit Sharma has led India’s batting from the start of the tournament. He began with a century against South Africa, and since then it has been a fairytale story. Rohit has registered five centuries in this World Cup – the most by a batsman in one edition of the competition. He has so far accumulated 647 runs from eight games – the most by a batsman. He needs 27 runs more to overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs – the most by a batsman in one season when he achieved it the 2003 World Cup.

Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Rohit Sharma ahead of the game against New Zealand. The former skipper also added that Rohit’s outstanding form has made the life of skipper Virat Kohli easy. Kohli has led the batting unit in the last four and five years, and the Mumbai opener’s form has only strengthened India’s batting.

“Rohit Sharma is in sublime form. He is batting absolutely unbelievable. He has been the rock for India. Sharma has given the kind of starts that has made life easier for the likes of Virat Kohli coming at No. 3 and the rest,” Gavaskar said to India Today.

Furthermore, Sunil Gavaskar said that if Rohit Sharma continues to score runs the way he is doing in the last two matches, India will lift their third World Cup at the Lord’s on July 14. Rohit will look to do what he has been doing so far in the World Cup and return home with the trophy.

“Even down the order when No. 4, 5 and 6 have not really contributed big runs, the fact that Rohit Sharma has held the innings together has helped ease the burden. And if he continues the same form in the next two games then you can be guaranteed that India will be the world champions once again on Sunday (July 14),” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
