ICC World Cup 2019: Jofra Archer Becomes England's Leading Wicket-Taker In Single Edition

Jofra Archer has had a dream World Cup debut as the lanky fast bowler became England’s leading wicket-taker in a single edition. After taking the wicket of New Zealand’s opener Martin Guptill, Archer completed 17 wickets in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. Hence, Barbados born gun fast bowler leapfrogged the previous record held by Sir Ian Botham, Andrew Flintoff, Vic Marks and Eddie Hemmings.

In fact, Archer was not originally named in England’s provisional World Cup squad. However, after the series against Pakistan, Archer was included in the squad in place of David Willey.

Archer has been right on the money.

The talisman fast bowler has impressed with his brisk pace as he has consistently bowled above 145 km/h. Hence, the tall fast bowler has breathed down the neck of the opposition batsman.

Archer has scalped five three-wicket hauls in the World Cup and he is the first English bowler to achieve the landmark.

The former all-rounder Sir Ian Botham had scalped 16 wickets in the 1992 World Cup in which England had reached the finals of the tournament. Meanwhile, Andrew Flintoff had snared 14 wickets in the 2007 World Cup edition.

Vic Marks and Eddie Hemmings had scalped 13 wickets each in the 1983 and 1987 edition respectively. Meanwhile, Mark Wood has currently taken 14 wickets in the World Cup.

Meanwhile, England has qualified for the semifinals of the tournament after they defeated New Zealand by a big margin of 119 runs. Jonny Bairstow was awarded the Man of the match for scoring a fine hundred. This was the second World Cup hundred for the England opener as he is batting at the top of his game.

On the other hand, Mark Wood was the pick of the England bowlers as he took three wickets. Tom Latham provided some resistance as he scored a fifty.
