Bangladesh and Afghanistan have showcased their fighting abilities in their respective last game against Australia and India. They will like to draw confidence from that game when they go up against each other on June 24 (Monday) at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

The Mashrafe Mortaza-led side has been terrific with their batting. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim have led the pack along with Liton Das and Mahmudullah. However, it is their bowling which has led them down in the tournament. The likes of Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman should raise their game and support the batsmen as they look for a win over Bangladesh. Against a strong Afghanistan bowling attack, Bangladesh’s bowlers will have to step up to make life easier for their batsmen.

On the other hand, Afghanistan produced a scintillating effort before going down against India by 11 runs on Saturday. They will take a lot of self-belief and confidence in their next game against Bangladesh at Southampton. The spinners were right on the money, and Gulbadin Naib will expect his spinners to be on their top against the in-form Bangladesh batsmen. The onus, however, will be on the batters to play big knocks and post good scores on the board in a bid to overtake the Bangladesh challenge.

Toss Report

The toss has been delayed by 10 minutes due to wet outfield and so has the start of play. All this provided the rain doesn’t return.

Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib has won the toss against Bangladesh and opted to bowl first.

Here is what the captains said,

Gulbadin Naib

We want to bowl first. Conditions look good for bowling and we played a game here, so we know the pitch. In the second innings against India, it looked alright throughout and this looks similar. We want to restrict Bangladesh to a chaseable total. We had a good chance to beat India and we’re confident that we can do better today. Two changes – Dawlat and Shenwari come in for Alam and Zazai

Mashrafe Mortaza

We like to bat first as it’s a used pitch, so want to put runs on the board. Two changes – Saifuddin and Mosaddek in for Rubel and Sabbir. The pitch here has been different from the others, has been slow and spun a bit. It’s a used pitch as I said and that’s why we wanted to bat.
