Meanwhile, India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma took time early on seeing off the new ball from Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. They took very minimal risk focusing mainly on rotating the strikes. However, once Aaron Finch removed both the strike bowlers, it was Dhawan who cut loose first. He took on Nathan Coulter Nile to shift gears as Rohit Sharma joined the party soon.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma crossed his 2000 ODI runs against Aussies when he reached the 37-run mark. He became the fastest player to get to the landmark taking 37 innings, against a particular team. The Mumbai cricketer overtook Sachin Tendulkar who reached the feat in 40 innings. Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Viv Richards are the other three batsmen to complete the top five.
