England defeated New Zealand in the Super Over boundary count to win the ICC World Cup 2019 on July 14 (Sunday) at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium in London. It is maiden World Cup title and will go down in history as one of the greatest ODI games. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who was at the ground, heaped praise on Ben Stokes and Kane Williamson for putting up a brilliant show.

Tendulkar hails Stokes and Williamson

It was a perfect Sunday for the cricket lovers as it can’t get better than this. Chasing 241 runs sets by New Zealand after batting first on a double-paced Lord’s wicket, England banked on an excellent partnership between Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler to stage the win. But New Zealand bounced back with a few wickets and luck going by the host, England managed to secure a tie taking the game to the Super Over.

Batting first in the tie-breaker, England managed to post 15 runs with Stokes and Buttler once again doing the job with the bat for the side. Jofra Archer, who was playing his first World Cup, was handed the ball to defend the target who made a nervous start with a wide. Jimmy Neesham continued his excellent form to take the game deep, but a brilliant work from Jos Buttler in the last ball of the Super Ove helped England secure a tie, but England became the champions on the boundary count – the luckiest way to win ever.

Sachin Tendulkar was present at the presentation ceremony and handed the man of the match and player of the tournament to Ben Stokes and Kane Williamson respectively. Stokes played the best innings of his life to lead England’s chase with an unbeaten knock of 84 runs to take the game deep before it ended on a tie. On the other hand, Kane Williamson single-handedly led New Zealand’s batting throughout the World Cup scoring 578 runs including two centuries. Tendulkar hailed Stokes and Williamson for their great efforts in the competition.
