Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has announced that he will bid farewell to cricket after the end of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. As Pakistan play their last World Cup game, there were claims from certain sections about giving him a farewell match for his contribution to Pakistan cricket. But former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram feels that Malik deserves a farewell dinner, not a farewell match.

Malik deserves farewell dinner and not match: Akram

Shoaib Malik went through a wretched form in the tournament and played only three matches for Pakistan. He has managed to score only eight runs including two ducks and eventually the management decided to drop him from the playing XI. Pakistan’s form in the tournament in the World Cup is much like Malik as they are currently playing against Bangladesh and needs to beat by by 300 runs to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the semifinals.

Wasim Akram while speaking to a Pakistani journalist, admitted Shoaib Malik’s contribution to Pakistan cricket. He also heaped praise on the veteran all-rounder calling him a nice guy and said that he deserves to bow out on a high and not like this.

“Of course, he had announced that he will retire after the World Cup. Unfortunately, it has not ended on a high note. I think he deserved to end his career on a high as he has done a lot for Pakistan cricket,” said Akram.

“He did not play many matches in the World Cup. He got out twice on duck, but this can happen to any player. We should always remember his services as he has won Pakistan many matches. He is a nice guy, so let’s send him a nice farewell, for once. I know he could not perform in this World Cup, but he has performed over the years for Pakistan,” he added.

Furthermore, when asked whether Shoaib Malik deserved a farewell match, Wasim Akram was quick to reply that this is not a club cricket match. He also said Malik deserves a farewell dinner but not a game that too in a tournament like World Cup.

“This is not club cricket where you can ask a player to play a one-day match. We can rather organize a farewell dinner for him,” he concluded.

Shoaib Malik has represented Pakistan in 287 ODIs scoring 7958 runs and claiming 158 wickets. He also has nine centuries and 44 fifties to his name.
