Indian National Cricket Team registered their second consecutive win in the ICC World Cup 2019 beating Australia by 36 runs at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Following their first defeat in the tournament, Aussie skipper Aaron Finch admitted that the last ten overs of India’s innings cost them the match.

Meanwhile, a century from Shikhar Dhawan and half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and skipper Virat Kohli propelled Indian National Cricket Team propelled to 352 runs. Rohit and Dhawan added 127 runs for the first wicket after Virat Kohli opted to bat first. Both the batters crossed their individual half-centuries before Nathan Coulter-Nile provided the first breakthrough. However, it didn’t deter India as Virat Kohli and Dhawan continued to score runs at the same pace.

Dhawan brought his third World Cup century before departing which saw Hardik Pandya walk out in the middle. The dynamic all-rounder ran an absolute carnage at Southampton to take over the 300-run mark. MS Dhoni and Kohli continued the free flow of runs as they post 352 runs at the end of 50 overs.

Aaron Finch and David Warner got Australia off to a good start adding 61 runs for the first wicket before a run out broke the partnership. Since then, former skipper Steve Smith stitched two god partnerships with Warner and Usman Khawaja, but once they got out, things were fading away for the Aussies. Glenn Maxwell tried to lead the run chase, but a double breakthrough from Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Smith and Marcus Stoinis to help India pip ahead in the game. Although Alex Carey tried his best but lacked partners at the other end as good stuff from Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar sealed the game in India’s favour.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Aaron Finch rued that they gave away too many runs in the last ten overs. He also backed David Warner to come back stronger in the matches to follow.

“They got 120 off the last ten overs and which is a lot. We didn’t bowl well. With so much batting to come, makes it tough to stop. There wasn’t huge amount on offer (help for the bowlers). We could have been straighter, dried up (runs) a little bit at times. They (India) bat very deep, you want to go for wickets. Just one of those games, they outplayed us. You look at everything (when asked if he’d change the combination),” Finch said.

“You assess the conditions; you look for different combinations and different balances over time. You are rubbing it in (when asked about his post-dismissal reaction). You back your partners, I could have said no as well. We were starting to pick up the tempo; that’s one mode of dismissal (run-out). They bowled well to him (Warner). The wicket was a touch slow when we started to bat. He’s (Warner) a great batsman; he’s a world-class player, and he’ll bounce back,” he concluded.
