Former Australia skipper Steve Smith led a superb comeback to post 223 runs after England bowlers dominated the first hour in the second semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2019 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Australia struggled to put up a good start after Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to bat first. English seamers Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes were brilliant with the new ball removing the in-form Australian openers – Aaron Finch and David Warner in the first three overs. Both Archer and Woakes made the new ball talk dismissing the Aussie openers cheaply. To make things worse, debutant Peter Handscomb also went back to the pavilion scoring four runs giving Woakes his second wicket to leave Australia at 14 for three in just 6.1 overs.

Since then, Alex Carey and Steven Smith revived the innings adding 103 runs for the fourth wicket. Meanwhile, Carey copped a nasty blow on his chin off a deadly bouncer from Jofra Archer. He immediately signalled towards the dressing room as blood came out of his chin. But the wicket-keeper batsman showed courage to carry on with the innings and chipped in with a fabulous knock of 46 before getting out to Adil Rashid. The England leg-spinner struck once again in that same over to remove all-rounder Marcus Stoinis to have Australia at 118 for five.

However, Steven Smith kept the Australian innings going rotating the strike while the odd boundaries kept coming. But England kept picking wickets at regular intervals to halt the free flow of runs. Pat Cummins also followed the pack giving Rashid his third scalp as England had Australia at 166 for seven. But Smith combined well with Mitchell Starc to add a 50+ run stand to cross the 200-run total as England looked for a breakthrough.

But a fine work from Jos Buttler provided a breakthrough removing the dangerous looking Steven Smith after a fine knock of 85 runs. Chris Woakes removed Mitchell Starc in the very next ball to put England once again back in the game as they restricted Australia to a gettable total in Birmingham.
