ToggleThe hosts England cruised to a comprehensive win of eight wickets against West Indies in the 19th match of the ICC World Cup 2019 at Rose Bowl, Southampton. England bowlers came up with a collective bowling performance to restrict West Indies to a paltry score of 212 runs after Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bowl first.
West Indies didn’t get off to a good start as they lost Evin Lewis early. The southpaw was cleaned up by a perfect yorker from Chris Woakes. Meanwhile, Chris Gayle was soon dismissed when the left-hander tried to pull Liam Plunkett but a got a top-edged which was taken by Jonny Bairstow.
England was too good.
Shai Hope was struck in front of the wickets by Mark Wood. Subsequently, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetymer added a fine alliance of 89 runs. However, the part-time spin of Joe Root ended the partnership when Hetmyer was caught and bowled by the off-spinner.

Nicholas Pooran played a good knock of 63 runs. However, apart from him, no West Indies batsman was able to get going. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood breathed down the neck of the Windies batters as both of them scalped three wickets each. Root accounted for two wickets whereas Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes took one wicket each.
On the other hand, England got off to fine start to their run-chase. The England openers – Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root added a fine partnership of 95 runs. Both the stylish batsman played delightful shots through the off-side to hit the ground running. However, Bairstow was dismissed by Shannon Gabriel after the right-hander scored 45 runs. In fact, West Indies ploy of testing England batsmen with short pitch deliveries did not succeed.

WI are perfectly suited for T20s where Russell can hammer 50 off 15 and win you a game. Individual brilliance. ODI cricket demands a different tempo to batting. Make no mistake, they will cause upsets but semis? They need a lot of things to go their way #ENGvWI

England coasting in spite of a question mark over two leading batsmen. Have always said the West Indies are a team you have to be wary of, not lose sleep over.

Asked Jason Roy if he could take any shot from any of his teammates as his own, what would it be? He said the Chris Woakes cover drive

Root the bowler, really made a difference today. Two caught and bowled big wickets changed the game, expected some resistance from @windiescricket

I don't understand why Carlos Braithwaite gets an extended run in the white ball format. He's good for nothing. He doesn't bowl well, he doesn't stick around with the bat in hand and he's big enough to field well. SIC!!! #ENGvWI
