Batting first, India posted 314 runs with a century from Rohit Sharma and a fifty from KL Rahul. They added 180 runs for the first wicket, but once they went back, India found it hard to get going. Rohit brought his fourth World Cup century and equalled Kumar Sangakkara’s record of four hundred in one edition of the tournament. But Mustafizur Rahman guided Bangladesh to an epic comeback picking five wickets to restrict India to a chaseable total.

Bangladesh staged an outstanding chase with excellent contributions from top-order and a brilliant fifty from Mohammad Saifuddin. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar produced a good start, but Indian bowlers picked wickets consistently to keep themselves in the game. Shakib Al Hasan led the chase brilliantly, but Jasprit Bumrah raised his game in the death overs after Hardik Pandya’s brilliant spell in the middle overs to stage a 28-run win and seal the semifinal berth.

Speaking at the end of the game, Mashrafe Mortaza heaped praise on Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim for putting great efforts throughout the tournament. Mortaza also added that they will look to play some outstanding cricket in the last match against Pakistan and finish on a high.

“That was the match we had to win. We couldn’t make it but there was some good performance by Mustafizur. One of them had to go on and score 80-90. Bit of luck could have gone our favour. The tournament has been nice, exceptional performance by Shakib and Mushy batted really well right through. A batsman like Rohit Sharma in such form, but it happens in cricket and we cannot blame Tamim for that. We will try to play our best in the last game. They were here supporting us today as well,” Mortaza said at the end of the game.
