If Cricketers Don't Play IPL, They Don't Go Far - Wasim Jaffer

Over the years, the evolution of the Indian Premier League has helped Indian cricket more than anything else. It gave the perfect exposure to the youngsters to make big strides in the International Cricket for the Indian National Cricket Team. Meanwhile, the Indian domestic legend Wasim Jaffer makes his voice on the lucrative tournament.

The veteran Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes that the current selection of players will be based on the performances in the Indian Premier League. He feels that the selectors were right in assessing the talent of the player through IPL, as it gives the clear idea of a player whether he can sustain in the international level or not.

With a lot of foreign players being involved in the tournament, the competition level is certainly high. Further, the pressure will reveal whether a certain player can deliver the goods or not for the team.

“They know if they don’t play the IPL, they won’t get too far. The IPL gives them the benchmark for them to get picked for the Indian team. You can’t blame them because you need to have T20 skills otherwise you are not going to play too much cricket,” he added.

”This is how the system is working now. The times have changed. Nowadays, I feel a player needs to have T20 skills otherwise he is not going to survive,” Jaffer was quoted as saying to India.TV

The right-handed batsman quoted that the T20 skills are must for the modern day batsman. He believes that it is something, which makes survival easy for a cricketer in International cricket.

“No matter how much runs you score in the Ranji Trophy or Duleep Trophy or Irani Trophy, if you don’t have T20 skills in batting or bowling, you are not going to go too far. Obviously, they look into that and they prioritise their game accordingly to suit T20 cricket which I don’t think is their fault. That is how the system works now and they want to get noticed.

All in all, as Wasim Jaffer said, the modern-day cricketer must have the skills of the T20 in order to survive. The tournament like IPL will also help the
