The former India captain, MS Dhoni had faced enough flak for his poor showing in the ODIs of late. Though 2019 brought a purple patch for him, his numbers batting at five for India weren’t too impressive in 2018. Meanwhile, team India’s head coach has backed the veteran saying those who criticise the ex-skipper, knows nothing about cricket. Ravi Shastri said Dhoni remains to the very best in the business. Furthermore, Shastri added MS is an ornament to the game.

“Nobody is good enough to criticise MS Dhoni. If you talk about him, do you even know anything about cricket?” he said.

Players like Dhoni come in once in 30-40 years – Ravi

During the Australia ODIs, MSD remained unbeaten across three innings, scoring 191 runs. Also, he had scored three fifties as well. In the following NZ series, Dhoni played three of the five games, hitting 49 off two innings. Though his run of form in 2019 has kept his critics’ silent, Shastri said nobody is good enough to point fingers on Dhoni.

He noted what MS achieved as the skipper is par excellence. Shastri said the wicketkeeper-batsman has all the ICC trophies in his cabinet, and that is no small an achievement. Moreover, team India’s head coach opined Dhoni is like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, who comes once in 30-40 years.

“Dhoni is like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. These guys come once in 30-40 years. He is an ornament to the game. He has been the captain of a number one Test team, and has two World Cups to his name. In fact, tell me which trophy has he not won? Name it. There is no space in his trophy cabinet.” Shastri noted.

You don’t get guys like Dhoni overnight – Shastri

Ravi Shastri concluded by saying one doesn’t get players like MS overnight, and those who criticise him should first go and learn a few things about cricket.

“I think people should learn a thing or two about cricket before they start talking about Dhoni. You don’t get a guy (of his experience and ability) overnight.”

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni will be in action against New Zealand in the T20I series.
