South Africa Test captain Faf du Plessis has said he is still the captain of South Africa’s T20I Team. Faf du Plessis’ future in South Africa’s T20I team is under doubt after the Proteas dropped him for the upcoming series against India. South Africa made it clear that the series against India is an opportunity for the team to prepare for the next year’s World T20I.

Quinton de Kock will lead the team against India while Rassie van der Dussen has been named the vice-captain. Faf du Plessis, however, said that he has no confusion whatsoever about his retirement. The right-handed batsman once again reiterated that next year’s T20 World Cup will be his international swansong.

“CSA [Cricket South Africa] are going to use opportunities through the season to bring in different captains in white-ball cricket to prepare for when I’m going to be done after the T20 World Cup. I’m still the captain of the T20 team and very much part of it,” Faf du Plessis told Mumbai Mirror.

Last month, there were reports suggesting that Du Plessis picked club over country after deciding to play in Euro T20 Slam. The tournament, which was recently cancelled, was scheduled to end on September 22, the same day the third match of the India-South Africa rubber.

Speaking about that, du Plessis said:  “Not at all. If I am there then a young captain can’t run his own ship.

“Always he will look over his shoulder [to find out] what I’m thinking. It’s about growing leaders in a year’s time when I’m done,” he added.

South Africa, meanwhile, have named as many as three newcomers in the T20I squad. Highveld Lions duo of batsman Temba Bavuma and spin bowling all-rounder Bjorn Fortuin and pacer Anrich Nortje are the latest additions to South Africa’s T20I teams.
