India kicked off the home Test season with an impressive victory over South Arica in the first Test in Vizag. A combined effort from Indian openers and bowlers saw India go 1-0 up in the series. With the ball, it was R Ashwin’s magical spin that saw India take a lead of 71 runs while in the second innings, Mohammed Shami once again showed his prowess with the old ball taking a fifer at a time when South Africa’s tailenders made India toil on the final day.

“I thought South Africans batted exceptionally well in the first, but in the second innings they were little hesitant to Shami’s kind of bowling.

“It was a purely magnificent spell by Shami that put us back in the game. Otherwise, I think given the conditions it would have been very very difficult,” he said.

Arun also said that to be the number one side, a team has to adapt to all the conditions. “To be a good number one team in the world, any conditions that come your way, you got to accept and say these are home conditions, If you want to be the number one team in the world, you got to look at the wickets and adapt your bowling instantaneously to be successful,” he further said.

Batting first, India registered 502/7 on the board in 136 overs. Riding on centuries from Dean Elgar and Quinton de Kock, South Africa fought back and the home side could just manage a lead of 71 runs. Rohit Sharma, who scored a century in the first innings, followed up with another ton as India asked South Africa to chase 395 in the fourth innings.
