Team India have started their campaign in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship on a thumping note. The world number one Test side thrashed West Indies by 257 runs in the second Test to wrap up the series 2-0.  West Indies began the fourth day requiring an unlikely 413 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.

With two days left in the game, a draw was never in equation. And although West Indies were firmly on the backfoot, many were hoping them to put up a good fight. The initial signs were promising as they did well to extend from 45/2 overnight to 159/4 after the day’s first interval. But it was just not the pointer to the things that were to follow.

After losing Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer in quick succession, Jermaine Blackwood, who replaced Darren Bravo as a concussion substitute, and Shamarh Brooks added 61 runs for the fifth wicket. Jasprit Bumrah broke the partnership, nicking Blackwood off, but Brooks carried onto his maiden Test half-century.

Virat Kohli then ran Brooks out to end his fine innings and trigger another collapse. Consequently, West Indies collapsed to 210 all out from 177 for 5. With this defeat, West Indies are yet to open their account in the ICC World Test Championship. On the other hand, India now have 120 points and are at the top of the points table.

India pocketed 60 points for the two wins. New Zealand and Sri Lanka are at second and third spot respectively with 60 points while England Australia and England complete the top five.
