Indians across the world celebrated Diwali on Sunday (October 27). Just like the others festivals that are celebrated in India, Diwali also transcends the religious boundaries. People of all religions come together to celebrate the festival of lights. And former India fast-bowler Zaheer Khan also did the same.

The legendary pacer, who is married to Bollywood diva Sagarika Ghatge, is one of the finest bowlers to have played for the country. In fact, he is one of the best left-arm pacers the game has ever seen. Zaheer Khan was a part of the team that won the World Cup in 2011.

With 610 international wickets, Zaheer Khan bowed out as the fourth-highest wicket-taker for India across formats. He has the second-highest wickets tally – 311 – for an India fast-bowler in Tests, behind Kapil Dev’s 434. Zaheer Khan ended his international career with 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is to his name. He brought down curtains on his international career in 2015 after losing his place in the team.

But despite his services to the country, he was not spared by some radical fundamentalists for greeting on Diwali. Zaheer Khan took to Twitter to wish his fellow Indians on the special occasion of Diwali. He posted a picture of himself and his wife dressed in traditional attires and wrote:

“Wishing everyone a very Happy and prosperous Diwali!”

And while most of Zaheer Khan’s followers wished him back, there were some who criticised him for celebrating a Hindu festival despite being a Muslim.

Here are some of the reactions:

An user named Muhammad Farooq Asad asked the ex-cricketer what face will he show Allah if he celebrates Diwali like this.

Not only on Twitter, Zaheer Khan faced the abuse on Instagram too:
