India have regained the number one ranking in One-Day Internationals after winning the fifth and final One-Day International against Australia on Sunday (October 1), the International Cricket Council announced soon after the game ended.

Australia and India had both started the series at 117 points with Australia ahead on decimal points and both of them had the chance to topple South Africa to become the best-ranked team in the world. Both the teams needed to win at least four games of the five-match series and the hosts did it in style, beating the visitors by seven wickets in the last game to wrap up the series 4-1.

The win in the final game has helped India to finish the series at 120 points, one point ahead of South Africa. On the other hand, the heavy defeat has seen Australia dropping to third with 114 points.

Virat Kohli & Co. had occupied the top spot for a brief period of time after taking a 3-0 lead in the series but loss in the fourth game saw them slip marginally behind South Africa to second position. However, the Men in Blue soon reclaimed it with a convincing win on Sunday.

Batting first, Australia failed to post a big total due to yet another failure from the middle-order and were restricted to 242 for 9. In reply, India, riding on Rohit Sharma’s 125 and Ajinkya Rahane‘s 61, chased down the total with utmost ease in the 43rd over.

Here is the updated ranking:

Rank Team Points
1 India 120
2 South Africa 119
3 Australia 114

6 Pakistan 95
7 Bangladesh 94
8 Sri Lanka 86
9 West Indies 77
