India vs Australia 2017: Peter Handscomb Added To Australia's Squad For ODI Series

With Aaron Finch  looking certain to miss the early part of the upcoming five-match series against India, Peter Handscomb has joined the Australian team in Chennai as a backup.

Earlier this week, Finch had missed the warm-up game against Board President’s XI due to a calf injury and was expected to play the first game after returning to training. However, he aggravated the injury in team’s regular training session on Thursday (September 14) and according to cricket.com.au, scans have revealed he will have to sit out the early part of the series. The 30-year old had sustained the injury while plying his trade for Surrey in England last month.

“Aaron re-aggravated his pre-existing calf injury during warm-up at training yesterday,” the physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said. “He has had a scan in Chennai and although we believe it is not a serious recurrence, he will not be available for the first few one-day matches here in India. He will remain with the squad whilst we assess the injury and establish his return to play timelines.”

Handscomb, who had impressed in the Test series against India earlier this year, made his ODI debut in January this year and has played five matches so far, scoring 90 runs with his career-best 82 coming in the very first innings. Recently, he had played a impressive knock of 82 in Bangladesh which had helped the visitors to defeat Mushfiqur Rahim & Co. to level the series and the right-handed batsman will get another chance to impress in subcontinent if he is drafted in the playing eleven for the first game.

Meanwhile, the visitors can also promote Travis Head to open the innings alongside David Warn. Hilton Cartwright had opened the innings in the practise tie but was dismissed for a duck. Head, on the other hand, had scored a century as an opener in January this year against Pakistan and also impressed in the warm-up game by scoring 65.

The series will start on Sunday (September 17) in Chennai.
