India like Australia didn’t get off to a perfect start as their opener Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed for a golden duck. The southpaw made the mistake of hitting the ball in the air and Glenn Maxwell took a simple catch at point. Subsequently, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli took charge as both of them batted with aplomb. The talisman right-handers added an alliance of 76 runs. India was always going to be in a shoo-in position with Kohli and Rohit at the crease.

However, Australian bowlers were able to turn the tables. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was plumbed in front of the wickets by Adam Zampa. Kohli could not pick the wrong one and had his pad in front of the ball. The standing umpire gave the decision in favour of the hosts but it was always going to be three reds on the Hawkeye.

This is how MS Dhoni finished off in style:

Rohit Sharma soon followed his captain back into the dressing room when he closed the bat face too early to get a leading edge which ballooned to Aaron Finch at mid-off. Ambati Rayudu got an outside edge which was sharply taken by Alex Carey.

Subsequently, Marcus Stoinis and Usman Khawaja added 87 runs for the second wicket. Stoinis and Khawaja adopted a cautious approach as they gave respect to tight bowling by India. The runs didn’t come in a thick and fast as Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah bowled great lengths.

Kedar Jadhav, who has the skills to break the partnership provided the second breakthrough. Stoinis tried to go over the midwicket but could not get the height in his shot as Virat Kohli took a sharp catch. Usman Khawaja completed his fifty off 74 balls but perished soon after completing his personal milestone. The southpaw charged Kuldeep Yadav and lofted the ball towards the square leg boundary, where Vijay Shankar took a good catch while running to his right.

Furthermore, Kuldeep Yadav was able to find the gulf between Peter Handscomb bat and pad and Dhoni did the rest. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell, who was in fine form in the T20I series looked in good touch and scored his runs without any trouble.

However, when Australia was able to build some impetus in their innings, Mohammed Shami came back for a brilliant second spell. Australia’s debutant Ashton Turner played a poor shot across the line when Shami bowled him with a slower ball. Shami was able to get some reverse and the in-form Glenn Maxwell didn’t have any answer to an incoming delivery. The gun fast bowler sent Maxwell’s off-stump cartwheeling.
