Australia pulled off a miraculous chase of 359 runs as the visitors batted with aplomb to win the Mohali ODI by four wickets. Ashton Turner and Peter Handscomb scored fine knocks to get their team over the line with 13 balls to spare. Furthermore, Usman Khawaja scored a fine knock of 91 runs to keep his good form going.

Batting first, India had set up a mammoth target of 359 runs after Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma played fine knocks.

Turning Point of the match:

Ashton Turner came out when Australia lost the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell. Turner was able to turn the match on its head as he scored a blistering knock. The right-handed batsman scored a staggering knock of 84 runs off just 43 balls with the help of five fours and half-a-dozen sixes.

Australia’s gargantuan run-chase of 359 runs didn’t begin on the right note. The tourist’s skipper Aaron Finch was dismissed in the first over of the match by India’s comeback bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Kumar was able to get the ball back into the right-hander and there was a huge gulf between the bat and the pad. Finch’s leg-stump was knocked out by Kumar and the Australian openers woes against the incoming ball continued.

Subsequently, Shaun Marsh was deceived by an accurate yorker from Jasprit Bumrah. Thus, Australia lost two early wickets to find their run-chase in a muddle.

Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb and Usman Khawaja were able to rescue their run-chase. They added a partnership of 192 runs to keep their team’s run-chase on the right path. Khawaja continued his good form as he scored 91 runs from 99 balls with the help of seven fours before he was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.

Peter Handscomb, who is regarded as one of the better Australian batsmen against spinners, scored his maiden ODI hundred. The right-hander scored 117 off just 105 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes.

Glenn Maxwell looked threatening but he was rapped in front of the wickets by Kuldeep Yadav. Yuzvendra Chahal was able to get the big wicket of Handscomb and Australia looked in trouble at 271-5.

However, Ashton Turner was able to turn the match on its head. Turner was able to hit the ground running as he played a fine knock.

India was able to get off to a good start after Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. India’s opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan who have had a quiet 2019, were able to hit the ground. Dhawan played the aggressor role as the southpaw batsman was able to hit the ground running. The left-hander returned back to form in style as he was able to time the ball to perfection.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma took a backseat to Dhawan’s assault. The flamboyant right-hander took his time in the initial stage before catapulting his attack on the opposition.

Shikhar Dhawan went on score his 16th ODI hundred as he batted at the top of his game. Dhawan took on the attack against the Australian bowlers after completing his hundred. The left-hander scored a sublime knock of 143 off just 115 balls as he brought his best to the table. The southpaw batsman scored 18 fours and three sixes in his blistering knock.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma also changed gears after completing his 40th ODI fifty. Rohit got his timing going as he scored a fine knock of 95 runs from 92 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. However, Rohit’s knock was put paid when he pulled a short delivery straight to deep square leg. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan added a gargantuan opening partnership of 193 runs, which was their 15th ODI opening stand.

Australia was able to come back.

KL Rahul, who was promoted to the number three position could not make the most of the platform, given by Indian openers. Rahul scored 26 off 31 balls whereas Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a rare day with the bat as he chased a wide ball and got a thick outside edge which was nicely taken by Alex Carey.

Rishabh Pant started his innings in the topmost gear as the southpaw batsman smashed 36 runs from 24 balls with the help of four fours and one six. Furthermore, Vijay Shankar played a good cameo as he scored 15-ball 26 laced with one four and two sixes.

On the other hand, Australia was able to pull back things in the fag end of the innings. Pat Cummins was the pick of the visitor’s bowlers as he took five wickets, which was his first five-wicket haul and conceded 70 runs in his 10 overs quota. Jhye Richardson took three wickets for Australia.
