Australia Cricket team pulled one back to keep themselves alive in the series despite valiant efforts from Indian National Cricket team skipper Virat Kohli to beat the host by 32 runs at the JSCA International Stadium Complex at Ranchi.

Kohli scores his 41st

In pursuit of a massive target of 314 runs, the men in blues had the worst possible start. The openers in the form of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan failed to make a merry of the batting wickets as they got out early. They didn’t get time to recuperate when Cummins struck Rohit in front to get him LBW courtesy a review. Since then, skipper Virat Kohli looked to take things into control playing two gorgeous looking drives, but Ambati Rayudu failed to provide support as he got out of screamer from Pat Cummins.

Since then, Kohli partnered with local boy MS Dhoni to bail India out. Struggling at 27 for three, Dhoni and Kohli paired to add 49 runs before Adam Zampa rattled Dhoni’s timber. However, Virat Kohli continued his onslaught first partnering Kedar Jadhav and then Vijay Shankar. The talismanic run-scored shared an 88-run partnership with Jadhav and then added 45 runs with Shankar before getting out. In the process, the Indian skipper brought his 41st ODI century and the second of the series after Nagpur.

Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja tried to keep up with the required run-rate but perished in an attempt to play big shorts. Adam Zampa starred with the ball picking three crucial wickets to keep Australia in the hunt and eventually took them over the line.

Finch and Khawaja sets tone for the Aussies

Previously, Australia have got a firm grip in the game after their openers got them off to a blistering start. Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja added 193 runs for the opening stand within 32 overs to set the tone. Both the batters looked in sublime touch as they dominated the bowling. Mohammed Shami has been the only bowler who contained runs from one end while others went for too many runs.

The duo struck the ball brilliantly as they paced the innings at their own will. The boundaries also kept coming as Finch stormed back to form forging a steady partnership with Khawaja. However, just when Finch looked in line to post a massive target, Kuldeep Yadav nipped in one to get him LBW. Although Finch missed his century, Usman Khawaja went on to get his maiden ODI hundred. Australia played the masterstroke promoting Glenn Maxwell up the order who went hard against the Indian National Cricket team bowlers.

But once MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja combined to get Maxwell (47) out, runs dried up for the visiting team as they managed to post 313 runs on the board. Kuldeep Yadav managed to pick three wickets but gave away 64 runs in his full quota of ten overs.ย After an impressive effort from the batters, the bowlers backed them up to pull one back in the five-match series.
