India skipper Virat Kohli led the chase with a brilliant century to take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series against South Africa at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Kohli remained unbeaten on 72 runs as the host beats the Proteas by seven wickets.

Chasing a moderate total, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma got India off to a flying start. Rohit struck two sixes to add 33 runs for the first wicket before getting out. But skipper Virat Kohli and Dhawan took control of the game since then to keep the home side on track.

They added 61 runs for the second wicket as India continue to match the asking rate. They both rotated the strike well while the boundaries kept coming consistently. But David Miller took an outstanding catch out of nowhere to pull one back for South Africa.

Rishabh Pant once again failed to make the opportunity count as he got out cheaply. But Virat Kohli kept his shape to lead India to another win. India needed 12 runs off the last two overs but with Kohli at his best India cruised home with six balls to spare.

Batting first, South Africa scored only 27 runs in the last four overs and 16 off those came in the final over as they managed to post a par score of 149 runs. The innings went into a standstill once Quinton de Kock got out off a brilliant catch from India skipper Virat Kohli.

He and debutant Temba Bavuma had set the platform up with a 50+ stand for the second wicket but the big hits never came in the death overs. The credit goes to the Indian bowlers as well as they found the slower deliveries which held during the second half of the innings. Quinton de Kock topped the scoring chart with 52 runs while Bavuma chipped in 49 runs while Deepak Chahar picked two wickets for India.
