Windies full-time skipper Jason Holder was ruled out from the ongoing first Test match against India due to an ankle sprain. Thus, Windies opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite is holding the reins of captaincy for the visitors. In fact, Brathwaite had filled the captaincy shoes against New Zealand when Holder was banned for slow over rate. Meanwhile, the tourists had to deal with another injury blow.

Holder is expected to sustain the injury in the practice session which was held in the UAE. In fact, the Windies regular skipper did not even bowl in the two-day practice match against the Board Presidents XI at Baroda. However, the Windies had kept Holder’s injury under the carpet as he had attended the pre-match press conference yesterday.

Another big blow for Windies.

On the other hand, Windies haven’t won a Test match on the Indian soil since the Mohali Test in 1994. Thus, losing Holder is a big blow for the tourists. Holder not only provides stability with the bowl but also he is a handy batsman while batting down the order.

Meanwhile, Windies are already without the services of their talisman fast bowler Kemar Roach. The pacer had to return back home in Barbados after the demise of his grandmother. Roach had also missed out on the warm-up game against the Boards Presidents XI.

Thus, Windies pace battery is lead by Shannon Gabriel who took the first wicket of KL Rahul. Keemo Paul is sharing the new ball with Gabriel whereas Sherman Lewis is making his debut for the Windies.

Therefore, Windies will hope that Jason Holder achieves the required fitness for the second Test match which will start from 12 October. Consequently, Holder has a week to get himself fit.

On the other hand, Prithvi Shaw is making his debut for India and has already scored a fifty.
