Windies skipper Jason Holder was able to do the first right thing on the first morning of the second Test match as he won the toss against India. Holder had no hesitation as he decided to bat first. However, it was the same old story from the Windies batsmen. Kieran Powell and Kraigg Brathwaite were able to get a partnership of 32 runs.

However, Powell who had scored a fine 83 in the second innings of the first Test match, once again tried to play a shot from out of the box. The right-hander could only find the hands of Ravindra Jadeja as Ravichandran Ashwin had his first wicket of the day.

It was India’s session.

Subsequently, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav were able to keep a tight grip on the proceedings against Windies two best batsmen, Shai Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite.

There were no easy singles on offer as Ashwin and Kuldeep didn’t let the batsmen off the hook. Thus, India was able to reap fruits for their good work as Brathwaite failed to pick a leg-spinner from the chinaman bowler.

The right-hander played for the wrong one and was plumbed in front as he was hit at the back leg. However, he decided to send the decision upstairs as he opted for the review. It was all three reds on the Hawkeye and Brathwaite had to take the long way back to the pavilion.

On the other hand, Shai Hope continued to be the ray of hope for the beleaguered Windies side. Hope showed the resistance as well as the stomach for the fight which has been missing from Windies arsenal.

Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur became the 294th Test player of India as he made his Test debut. However, it wasn’t the ideal start for the Mumbai bowler as he had to leave the field after pulling his hamstring.

Umesh Yadav was able to strike at the stroke of lunch as he got the important scalp of Shai Hope. Windies scored 86-3 in the opening session.
