India brought in two changes for the third and final ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as Washington Sundar becomes the youngest Indian cricketer to debut for India in T20I, while Jasprit Bumrah made way for the young Mohammad Siraj. Sri Lankan batsmen were out of place as Rohit Sharma put them to bat first after winning the toss. Sri Lanka could manage only 135 in their quota of 20 overs which is also the lowest ever T20I total at this ground after a brilliant bowling display from the Indian bowlers. India reached the score with four balls to spare as the Indian batsmen handled pressure well as the game got closer.
Sri Lanka didn’t have a good start as they were reduced to 18 for 3 in just three overs with Jaydev Unadkat continuing his good form after making a comeback in the T20 squad. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Asela Gunaratne batted sensibly in the middle overs as they stitched a 38-run partnership before Samarawickrama got dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Lower-order batsman Dasun Shanaka played some shots in the end overs as they take their total score to 135 runs muscling young Siraj for 18 runs in the last over.
Jaydev Unadkat and Hardik Pandya was the pick of the bowlers for India bagging two wickets each and Washington Sundar impressing everybody with his calm head on debut.
Unlike the other two matches, India had a relatively slow start while chasing a target well within reach. India registered 26 runs in the first five overs losing the lone wicket of KL Rahul who missed out, after scoring two back to back fifties. On the hand, centurion from the last got off to a good start but failed to capitalise on it as he was undone by an extra bounce Shanaka to get caught at deep mid-wicket at the score of 27.
However, young Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey took control of the game rotating the strike at ease and hitting boundaries at regular intervals to match up with the required run rate. Unfortunately, Iyer got run out as the ball was hit too straight and Dananjaya got a hand on that, deflected that onto the stumps at Shreyas Iyer’s end who was backing up a long way.
India lost three wickets at quick successions as she was reduced to 108 for 5 with 28 needed off 23 balls. MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik batted sensibly to take India home as the game got closer to the end as India whitewash Sri Lanka to win 3-0. Sri Lankan bowlers bowled some tight overs at the end; however, the Indian batsmen got the better of them in the end.
With the long home season coming to an end, India will look forward to the all-important South Africa series which starts next month.
