The captain of the Indian team, Virat Kohli, received a lot of credit from former English cricketer David Gower, for respecting the longest form of cricket, by signing a stint with English County Club Surrey.

For those unaware, the present all format captain of India Kohli underwent a horror tour of England back in 2014.

Kohli repeatedly fell into the trap set up by prominent paceman James Anderson. Anderson made the most out of the outside off channel.

As a result, Kohli averaged just 13 in almost ten outings in the five-match Test series.

After piling on double-tons in all series played during the season of 2016, Anderson challenged Kohli for scoring runs whenever he tours England next, claiming that the run-machine is nothing but a home track bully.

However, Kohli answered all his critics during his path-breaking run spree during the distinct tour of Australia and South Africa respectively. The only place left unvanquished for Kohli would be on the hallowed turfs of England.

Therefore, this time the Indian skipper intends to prepare for the upcoming assignment by featuring for Surrey in the month of June, in order to prepare for the testing conditions in the United Kingdom (UK),

It is a very good thing for him. It’s a very good thing for Surrey too. It is a coup by them. They will be delighted to have him – both as a player and someone they can learn from,” reckons former English cricketer Gower, during his interaction with TOI.

Virat is one of the great players in the world at this moment. We know that his last tour here (in 2014) was disappointing. So, I know he has a list of things on his agenda. He wants to prove that he can make as many runs in England as he does elsewhere,” continued one of the most stylish batsmen from his era.

In conclusion, Gower mentioned that his move to select county cricket over national duty represents his respect towards the longest format of the game.

Playing in England in August, the conditions will be more favourable (to Kohli). It is good to see him approach this whole tour from the point of view of giving himself and his team the best chance of success in all formats. By coming here, he is making the world aware how much he respects Test cricket,” concluded Gower.

The 61-year-old Kent-based David Gower played 117 Tests and 114 One-day Internationals for England.
