The importance of wearing helmets in the game has been once again highlighted after Indian women cricketer Vellaswamy Vanitha suffered a nasty-looking injury while batting without her protective gear. However, she was lucky to avoid any serious injury as the blow left her with swollen lips and few cuts.

The 27-year batswoman took to Instagram to post a selfie, showing her injured lips and emphasised on the importance of wearing helmets as she wrote: “Lucky to get away with just few cuts and blood. This is what happens when you don’t wear your helmet and bat ? safety !!.”

The right-handed batswoman, who was not in the squad for this year’s World Cup, last played for India in November 2016 during a T20I match against West Indies while her last ODI appearance came in 2014. So far, she has played 6 ODIs and 16 T20Is, scoring 85 and 216 runs respectively.
