Indian Women Cricketers Ask BCCI For Psychologists To Tackle Mental Health

Indian Women’s Cricket Team has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide a psychologist to tackle the mental health of the players. Notably, legendary England cricketer Sarah Taylor announced her international retirement due to increasing anxiety problems.

Mental health has been a trending problem currently and people, mainly youngsters and taking up their lives failing to handle pressure situations. Indian Women’s Cricket Team have taken this problem seriously and requested the BCCI for a mental conditioning coach or a sports psychologist.

India’s T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur recently spoke of the same to the Newindianexpress.com. She admitted of asking for a coach specialised in the same to help young cricketers tackle high-pressure situations.

“We are working on that (the mental aspect of the players),” she said on Saturday.

“We have requested the BCCI for someone like a sports psychologist, who can travel with us. Have spoken to coach as well. Nowadays, the pressure is high. You need someone to discuss things when they are not fine,” she added.

The current set-up comprises of young cricketers as young as 15-year-old Shafali Verma, who recently made his international series against South Africa. They need to have someone specialised to help go through difficult situations. Harmanpreet Kaur also revealed that she speaks to her father whenever she is not in good head space.

“You never know who can help you perform and give you some sort of direction. I have my dad with whom I can share anything. We have that bonding where we don’t need to talk every day but if there is something bothering me, he helps me sort things out. We don’t know if everybody in the team has that someone,” Harmanpreet continued.

The Indian women’s hockey team has brought on board a sports psychologist this year. The benefits are there on the table and the cricket team also wants to follow the same path.
