Indian Women’s team coach WV Raman feels that his team can emulate the heroics of Kapil Dev’s team that won the World Cup in 1983. The Indian ladies will play in the upcoming 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, and their first game is against the hosts itself.

Raman, nonetheless, feels that the Indian team is one of the favourites for the tournament that begins from 21st February and that they can go all the way.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s team has been in good form of late, as they recently defeated Australia in the Tri-Nation Series, and chased down a target of 173 runs, which was their highest score while successfully chasing a total.

Notably, the Indian Women’s team have never won an ICC title, but that’s not something that coach Raman will be worried about.

WV Raman says Indian Women’s team is one of the favourites for the T20 World Cup 2020:

Speaking ahead of the global event, the Indian women’s coach says his team is one of the favourites for the title and that they will try to emulate the success of the Indian men’s team, led by Kapil Dev, who triumphed at the 1983 World Cup to bring home India’s first-ever coveted ICC trophy.

“Definitely one of the favourites. They made people sit up and take notice in the 2017 World Cup (runners-up) and the 2018 T20 World Cup (semifinalists). Since then there has been a lot of improvement, in terms of fitness, agility on the field and their approach to batting,” Raman was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

He further added, “If they end up doing that, they will probably do what Kapil Dev’s World Cup-winning team did for Indian cricket in 1983. And they will become superstars if they go on to win.”

“They have been shaping well over the last six months. It is more or less a better and settled team than perhaps what it was when I took over. These girls have a very good chance in this World Cup,” he said.

The Indian ladies will play two warm-up matches against Pakistan and the West Indies on Sunday and Tuesday respectively, before opening their T20 World Cup campaign versus Australia on 21st February, at the Spotless Stadium.
