The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has delivered the fitness update on young opener Prithvi Shaw. Last week, the right-handed batsman had left the Mumbai camp midway through their Ranji Trophy fixture against Karnataka at Bandra Kurla Complex due to a left rotator cuff injury.

The highly-rated youngster was rushed to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to assess the extent of damage. And it looks like, he would take some time to recover as the BCCI has confirmed the batman would miss the practice matches in New Zealand.

The opening batsman was named in the India A squad for the one-dayers and the four-day games in New Zealand. He is now in a race against time to be fit for the series. The highly-rated batsman is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA. The India A squad is set to depart on January 10 for the series. Shaw’s availability for those games will be known later, the board revealed.

“Team India batsman Prithvi Shaw suffered from rotator cuff and labrum injury to his left shoulder while fielding on Day 1 (January 3, 2020) of the Paytm Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Karnataka.

“Prithvi is currently under rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and has been ruled out of India A’s two upcoming practice games in New Zealand. A call on his participation in the one-day and four-day matches will be taken at a later stage,” stated BCCI in a statement.

Having made his comeback in November after serving a doping ban, Prithvi Shaw was recently named in India A’s squad. The right-handed batsman earned the call after hitting the ground running for Mumbai in domestic circuit.

He scored 240 runs in five innings, including three half-centuries, for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He followed that up with scores of 66 and 202, his maiden first-class double century, in Mumbai’s 309-run win over Baroda in their Ranji Trophy opener in December.
