Team India, on Saturday, suffered a big injury scare with their skipper Virat Kohli injuring his thumb. Kohli suffered the injury during the team’s practice session at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Saturday (June 1). The team-management would be desperately hoping that Kohli recovers in time before the team opens its campaign on June 5 against South Africa.

As soon as Kohli injured his thumb, he  appeared in some discomfort and was attended to by the physiotherapist Patrick Farhart immediately. Farhart then applied some spray to ease the pain before Kohli applied some ice. The India skipper then walked off the field as he returned to the dressing room. With India set to play at least nine games in the World Cup, Indian team-management would have to take a bold call if Kohli’s thumb injury is serious.

In case the injury becomes serious, India might pay a price. Kohli, on his day, can singlehandedly defeat any side on the world. What makes him even more dangerous is the fact that he can produce those performances on a daily basis. While no player has scored more than 7,000 ODI runs at an average of over 54, Kohli averages 59.57 and already has 41 centuries in just 219 innings.

India, meanwhile, had a mixed result from the warm-up games. The favourites suffered a crushing six-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand. However, the two-time winners bounced back in style by thrashing Bangladesh by 95 runs in their second warm-up game last week. KL Rahul and MS Dhoni both scored a century as they played a knock of 108 and 113 runs respectively to help India post 359 for 7. The bowlers then bowled out Bangladesh for just 264.

Meanwhile, India’s opponents South Africa have started their tournament on a poor note. The Proteas suffered a heavy 104-run defeat at the hands of England in the World Cup-opener. Bowling first, South Africa conceded 311 runs. As many as four batsmen – Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes – scored fifties. The England bowlers then bowled out the Proteas for just 207.
