One of India’s finest match winners Gautam Gambhir has called time on his career. The opener has spend close to a decade playing at the international level. The southpaw last appeared for India in the home series against England in 2016. Overall, he has played 58 Tests and scored 4154 runs at an average of 41.95. He fetched nine centuries and 22 fifties.
The most difficult decisions are often taken with the heaviest of hearts.
And with one heavy heart, I’ve decided to make an announcement that I’ve dreaded all my life.

Gautam Gambhir has a stellar record in international cricket
In ODIs, the elegant batsman played 147 ODIs and hit 5238 runs at an average of 39.68 and a strike rate of 85.25. One of the biggest highlights of his career will always be the match-winning 97 against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup finals. He was known as a big match player as he played a stellar role in the 2007 World T20 finals as well, against Pakistan.
A leader who led his side by example
He has led IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL trophies and was the leading run scorer on numerous occasions. Ahead of the 2018 IPL auction, Gambhir parted ways with KKR and joined Delhi Daredevils instead. It turned out to be an ordinary season for him as he went on to bench himself. The cricketer is known for wearing his heart on his sleeves.
Gambhir calls time on his career
“So, here I am. After more than 15 years of cricket for my country, I want to retire from playing this beautiful game,” said Gambhir in the video.
“Despite all the aches and pains, fears and failures, I won’t mind a repeat of this in my next life too. But obviously, with a few more wins for India, a few more hundreds, and maybe, in the next life, a few more five-wicket hauls as well. But this may sound a little wishful, but then I have seen wishes do come true,”he said.
He has always been passionate about his game. Gambhir enjoys a massive fan following and has been quite vocal on social issues. Let’s take a look at how Internet reacted to this call from the legendary cricketer.
