IPL 2018: Huge Honour to Captain Delhi Daredevils Again - Gautam Gambhir

Delhi Daredevils officially announced Gautam Gambhir as their captain in an event organised in Delhi.

Already, it was confirmed  Gambhir would lead the side, and the officials put a stamp of authority on the speculations today (March 7).

Gambhir is making his comeback to Delhi Daredevils after seven-year – having last represented them in 2010.

He was purchased by the franchise for Rs 2.80 Crore in the auction. The comeback man felt honoured to lead the side once again:

“It is a huge honour to once again captain DD. To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the sport in the city. I firmly believe that with the players currently involved we have the makings of a very good side. The potential of this group of players is immense, and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances. It is also going to be great to work in unison with Ricky, an absolute champion himself,” he said.

Gambhir played for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011 to 2017.

He was purchased by the franchise for Rs 11.04 Crore in the IPL auction in 2011. KKR retained the left-handed batsman since then but surprisingly, did not retain him on the retention day.

It was revealed Gambhir himself wanted to play for Delhi and had requested team management not to retain him.

However, he even failed to get much attention in the IPL auction.

Only Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab bid for him and in the end, he was sold for an amount of Rs 2.80 Crore.

Looking at Gambhir’s credentials as captain and as a player in IPL, the amount surely does not do justice to him.

He had led a franchise (KKR) to two title victories – in 2012 and 2014. Apart from that, he also had 4132 runs alongside his name in IPL in 148 games.

Last year, he was the second highest run-scorer in league with 498 runs alongside his name. The upcoming season will be an opportunity for him to do well and show he is still one of the best players present on the cricketing circle.

Delhi Daredevils will play their first game of the season on April 8 against Kings XI Punjab at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium.
