With the date of the auction for the Indian Premier League drawing near, the rumours surrounding the players every franchise is looking out for is also increasing.
All the franchises have already announced the list of their retained players and would be looking to build a solid squad when the players go under the hammer on January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru.
Now recent media reports are suggesting that Kings XI Punjab are interested in securing the services of Bangladesh star Tamim Iqbal. A proven player in the international circuit, Tamim has been in fine form of late.
He was one of the most impressive players in this year’s Champions Trophy, finishing the tournament with 293 runs to his name in just four outings. His form also continued in the different T20 leagues across the world, as he plied his trade in the Natwest T20 Blast, Bangladesh Premier League and the Pakistan Super League, scoring 433 runs in 16 innings.
One of the most sought-after openers in international cricket at the moment, Tamim also has experience of playing in the Indian Premier League. The hard-hitting opening batsman had played in IPL in 2012 and 2013, playing for now-defunct Pune Warriors India. The 28-year old has ample experience of playing at the highest stage of the game and might turn out to be a brilliant buy if the Kings XI decide to go for him. With an experience of 52 Tests, 174 ODIs and 59 T20Is behind his name, Tamim will add the much-needed experience to a side which had failed to perform consistently in the first ten seasons of the league.
Barring the second place finish in 2014 and the semifinal appearance in the inaugural season, the Punjab-based franchise had not managed to progress from the league stage in the other eight seasons.
That they are now desperate to change their fortunes is very much clear, as they will play the next season with a completely different squad, having retained just one player, Axar Patel from their last season.
Meanwhile, as many as eight Bangladeshis will be in the fray for an IPL contract in the upcoming auction. Along with Tamim, media reports from Bangladesh suggest that Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Mahmudullah, Mehedi Hasan, Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman and Abul Hasan will also feature in the auction.
