IPL 2018: Match 22, Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Punjab – Statistical Highlights

Continuing their winning streak, Kings XI Punjab defeated Delhi Daredevils by 4 runs in a low-scoring thriller on Monday. The win took them at the top of the table as they registered their fifth win in six games.  Sent in to bat first, a Chris Gayle-sans Punjab were off to a sedate start. They kept on losing wickets at crucial junctures and were eventually restricted to 143 for 8.

But the modest score turned out to be just enough in the end. Delhi once again failed to deliver with the bat and could manage only 139 for 8 despite Shreyas Iyer’s fighting 57. The loss was Delhi’s fifth in six games as they found themselves reeling at the bottom of the table.

With the game now done and dusted, here is a look at some interesting numbers:

1. Liam Plunkett finished his debut match with impressive figures of 3 for 17.  These are the best bowling figures on debut for a Delhi Daredevils player in the IPL. The record was previously held by Doug Bracewell who registered figures of 3/32 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012.

2. This was Kings XI Punjab’s fourth win on the trot this season. The streak is their longest in the last four IPL seasons.

3.  The 4-run loss is Daredevils’ smallest losing margin in terms of runs in the IPL. This is also the narrowest win for Punjab in the IPL since the start of the 2014 season. They had defeated Chennai Super Kings by four runs in their 3rd match of this season.

4. At the age of 18 years and 165 days, Prithvi Shaw became the youngest player to open an innings in the IPL. In doing so, he surpassed his teammate Rishabh Pant who opened for the Daredevils against now-defunct Gujarat Lions in 2016 at the age of 18 years and 212 days.

5. This was Kings XI Punjab’s first win against Delhi Daredevils in Delhi since 2015.

6. Kings XI Punjab’s total of 143 for 8 is the lowest defended total by any team in the IPL in Delhi. Deccan Chargers won while defending 145 for 7 against the home side in the 2010 season.
