IPL 2018: Venkatesh Prasad Hopes to Live to Expectations of Kings XI Punjab
Venkatesh Prasad, the newly appointed bowling coach of Kings XI Punjab, has said he hopes to live up to the expectations of the franchise,
“I am very much looking forward to this coaching assignment, and it is wonderful to be a part of Kings XI Punjab. I want to thank the team for showing confidence in my ability. I just hope I live up to their expectations and have a good 2018 session,” he told ANI.
Prasad was appointed as the bowling coach of the franchise yesterday (March 4). He resigned from his post of Chief selector of the junior panel a couple of days back, and from then, there were expectations that he would join an IPL team.
Just a day after that, official confirmation was made by the franchise. He had to leave his job at BCCI to avoid the conflict of interest row.
As per the rules, anyone associated with BCCI is not allowed to be associated with any other state or IPL team.
The rule saw likes of Rahul Dravid, Paras Mahmdrey, Bharat Arun, R Sridhar and Patrick Farhat leaving their job at IPL to be part of BCCI.
It is also to be noted BCCI did not reward the junior selection panel after team’s triumph in the U19 World Cup, which is probably also one of the reasons behind him giving up the job.
Prasad will join the likes of Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge and Mithun Manhas in the backroom staff. Sehwag is the Mentor and Head of Cricketing Operations, who is associated with the franchise since 2014.
Hodge, on the other hand, was recently appointed as the Head Coach for two years. He worked in the same capacity with Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017.
Mithun Manhas had joined KXIP last year, as Assistant Coach and is all set to continue his association with the team.
He was also the coach of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016/17 domestic season and performed the same role at the start of 2017/18 season. He later got appointed as the batting consultant of Bangladesh U19 team for U19 World Cup.
Kings XI Punjab is one of the three franchises which is playing its trade right from the inception of IPL but is yet to win an IPL title. The franchise would be hoping to win the trophy for the first time.
R Ashwin is the captain of the side, who will make his captaincy debut in IPL.
Kings XI Punjab plays their opening game of the season on Apil 8 against Delhi Daredevils.
