IPL 2019: 'MS Dhoni Should Have Been Banned'

MS Dhoni had left one and all shellshocked with his behaviour during the game between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals earlier this week. The game was set for a thrilling finish with Super Kings needing 18 runs from the final over with MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. The Super Kings were reeling at 24 for 4 before fifties from Ambati Rayudu and Dhoni revived their hopes.

Coming to the last over, Super Kings collected 10 runs from the first two balls. On the third ball, Ben Stokes castled Dhoni to add another twist to the game. New man Mitchell Santner then faced a full toss from Stokes that seemed above waist height. Main umpire Ulhas Gandhe then took his hand out to signal a no-ball. However, Gandhe’s decision was immediately overruled by Bruce Oxenford, standing at square leg.

Furious with the turn of events, an angry Dhoni walked out of the dugout to get into a heated exchange with the umpires. The scene was as bizarre as it could get as even Stokes tried to pacify the man who is famously called ‘captain cool’. Fortunately, for the Super Kings, Santner hit a last-ball six when they needed three to take them over the line. After the match, Dhoni was found to have breached the Code of Conduct and he accepted the sanction.

He was subsequently fined 50% of his match fee. However, many felt that the punishment was too lenient. Dhoni’s former India teammate Virender Sehwag is also one of them. The legendary batsman said that Dhoni was let off easily and he should have been ‘banned for two to three games’.

“I feel Dhoni was let off easy and should have been banned for at least 2-3 games. Because if he did this, tomorrow another captain can do the same. Then what is the value of an umpire,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Sehwag did not beat around the bush as he said that a fitting punishment would have set a precedent.

“I feel he should have been banned for a few games by IPL to set an example. He should have stayed outside and instead have spoken to the fourth umpire with the walkie talkie,” Sehwag said.

“I feel he shouldn’t have come to the ground when there are two CSK members already and they were equally inquisitive regarding the no-ball,” he added.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
