Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore have lost six out of six matches and are almost out of contention for the playoffs of the tournament. The loss against Delhi Capitals at the Chinnaswamy stadium ensured that Kohli’s team now needs nothing less than a miracle in the league stage to have a slight chance to go through to the next stage. This would mean skipper Kohli to play all the matches as he holds the team’s baton and is their key player to inspire the turnaround.
But then again,  nothing comes without a cost and the current situation is not an exception either. If Virat Kohli plays all the upcoming matches for RCB, it would mean that the talismanic Indian will also have to go through the wear and tear process and that could affect his fitness ahead of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup. Who can forget the last edition when he suffered an injury during the season which cost him his maiden county stint.

Fans and experts have already raised concerns about his work pressure. In fact, even former England Captain Michael Vaughan cited concerns too, tweeting:

“If India are smart they rest @imVkohli now for the World Cup … Give him some time off before the big event … #IPL2019”.

It is no brainer that players need adequate time to rest and prepare themselves after the hectic schedule of IPL. Many foreign players will be called back by the respective boards during the first week of May so that the players can get rest and get ready for the practice camp for the ultimate event. Also, the injury is a concern and none would like to miss the event due to an unfortunate injury in the IPL which have a hectic schedule and being played in harsh summer conditions.

It would be wise for BCCI to rest some of its vital players after some particular number of IPL matches this season. Virat Kohli has already had a busy 18 months, having played all 5 matches in the recently concluded series against Australia followed by 6 IPL Matches. His last break was during the New Zealand series in which he was rested after the third ODI and was seen on a vacation with his wife Anushka Sharma. He has played 19 ODIs, 10 T20Is and 11 Tests since June 2018. A proper rest would mean Kohli will start the World Cup campaign with proper mental and physical balance. Being the most vital player of the Indian team, it is time to consider his workload and discharge him from IPL for the sake of Team India.
