However, former international umpire Simon Taufel feels it has nothing to do with the spirit of the game. Taufel also added that as per the law, a batsman cannot get out before a bowler delivers a ball and Ashwin did what was within the rule.

My view on this particular issue is, it has nothing to do with the spirit of cricket. I was in India when the incident happened and I saw it on TV. Subsequently, we had an MCC Laws sub-committee meeting and discussed the event. During our discussion, we spoke at length about Law 41.16. The intent of the law is that the non-striker should not leave their ground at the bowler’s end before the ball is delivered,” Taufel wrote in ESPNCricinfo.

Dhoni crossed the line

Furthermore, Simon Taufel added that MS Dhoni crossed the line when he came inside the field challenging the decision of an umpire. Dhoni came barging in contesting a decision of the third umpire during Chennai Super Kings game against Rajasthan Royals. It was full toss delivery over the waist but the third umpire Bruce Oxenford failed to pick it up which made Dhoni fuming with anger.

Taufel pointed out that no non-participating payers can enter the field. Dhoni, later on, apologised for his actions and pleaded guilty to the match officials.

But non-participating players or even coaches and managers entering the field of play to approach an umpire is not right. MS acknowledged this by accepting and pleading guilty to the charge imposed by the IPL match officials,” he concluded.
